The pediatric dental residency program at New York Presbyterian-Columbia University Medical Center prepares the student for an active role in clinical practice and academia in the specialty of pediatric dentistry. A hospital-based certificate program with a Columbia University affiliation, this pediatric dental residency program provides broad-based clinical exposure at several practice settings including New York Presbyterian Hospital, Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, and Blythedale Children’s Hospital. The 24-month program which begins July 1st of each year, is open only to US or Canadian dental school graduates who are licensed or eligible for licensure in the state of New York. Five new positions are offered each year.

This program enables the student to confidently treat the well child, the mentally compromised child, and the child with special needs. Experience in research and teaching are additional program components. The program is designed in accordance with the Commission on Accreditation requirements for Advanced Education Programs in Pediatric Dentistry and is accredited by the ADA Council on Dental Education.

Course of study includes clinically oriented multidisciplinary basic science core courses. Clinical instruction consists of clinical practice in advanced pediatric dentistry, preventive and interceptive orthodontics, nitrous oxide/oxygen psychosedation, treatment for children with special needs, pediatric anesthesiology and operating room protocol, oral conscious sedation, pediatric medicine, pediatric dentistry instruction preceptorship, and pediatric oral trauma management. Residents spend two weeks on rotations in the Pediatric Medicine Service, two weeks in Emergency Room Service, and one month in the Department of Pediatric Anesthesiology in Morgan Stanley and Blythedale Children’s Hospitals.

The patient pool is extensive and diverse. Residents gain extensive clinical experience in pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic management of patients who exhibit difficult and/or anxious behavior.

Didactic curriculum includes pediatric theory, pediatric dentistry literature review, research methodology, oral medicine, oral pathology, orthodontics, cephalometrics, cariology, pediatric medicine, methodology in preventive dentistry, and advanced pediatric dental research. Original research or other scholarly project leading to a publishable paper must be completed.

Faculty includes full time faculty as well as part time pediatric dentists who have private practices in the Greater New York metropolitan area.

Upon completion of the program, the student receives a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and meets the advanced education eligibility requirements of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

Dental residents receive the same salary as medical residents. In 2007-08, stipends are $46,496 and $48,797, for the first and second years, respectively.
