THE SEVENTEENTH ANNUAL
BENJAMIN TENENBAUM MEMORIAL LECTURE
IN THE STUDY OF THE ETIOLOGY OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE
Jeffrey Ebersole, DDS, PhD
University of Kentucky School of Dentistry
"The Non-human Primate Model of Periodontal Infections and Disease: Potential for Prospective Study of Oral-Systemic Disease
Linkages"
This presentation will focus on description of the chronic polymicrobial infection and chronic immunoinflammatory responses that
occur in periodontitis in the nonhuman primate. The results will describe the characteristics and changes in the subgingival
microbiota that occur with disease progression, and delineate the profiles of host responses to the polymicrobial challenge in the
oral cavity. These local host-parasite interactions will then be related to systemic changes that accompany the chronicity of the
disease, and demonstrate strategies of prospective .clinical. studies of this oral disease to determine the biologic basis of
oral-systemic disease relationships.
