CDM Students Begin Clinical Training

Ninety-six members of the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine Class of 2026 made the transition from classroom studies to clinical practice at a recognition ceremony held on Wednesday, June 25, 2025. Family and friends of the students attended to watch as students made the ceremonial leap.

In his welcoming remarks, Dennis Mitchel, DDS, MPH, dean of the College of Dental Medicine, told students that the occasion was a momentous one. “The transition from classroom to clinic is significant,” he said. “You are crossing the threshold from didactic learning to clinical practice. From now on, your work will focus on patients rather than plastic simulations.”

Dana L. Wolf, DMD, MS’05, senior associate dean, Predoctoral Academic and Student Affairs and associate professor of Dental Medicine at CUMC, noted that there are three major milestones for CDM students. The first is the bestowing of white coats when students begin their studies. The last is graduation. The second is the shift from didactic learning to clinical practice. Each, she said, is an important step in the process of becoming a dentist.

Drs. Steven Kresch and Ezzard Rolle who will serve as group clinic leaders also addressed the rising third year students, reminding them to trust themselves and to not be afraid to ask for help.

Lorenzo Martinez, president of the class, recalled the boat ride the class took as first year students. “We all boarded the ship, not really knowing much about one other,” he said. “Within three or four hours, something changed.”

Our class really is one of a kind,” he said. “We build each other up, challenge each other to be better.
