Externships & Observational Visits in AEGD, Endodontics, Orthodontics, Periodontics, or Prosthodontics

The application cycle opens: February 1

We invite eligible candidates to apply to visit the school in Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD), Endodontics, Orthodontics, Periodontics, or Prosthodontics. Externship Applications and Observational Request Forms will be accepted during the Spring semester (February through May).

Requests for visits after May will be considered in the following programs only - AEGD & Orthodontics.

Scheduled Visits

Time commitments per program are exclusive to the externship program for US dental students and AEGD and GPR residents, please review the chart below. Time commitments per program for observational visits for early career dentists and international dentists will be scheduled per availability.

Visiting Externship Program Eligibility

  • U.S. or Canadian dental students enrolled in their 3rd or 4th year and be in good academic standing
  • Dentists enrolled in residency programs - AEGD or GPR and be in good standing

Visiting Externship Requirements

  • Must provide a letter from the Dean, Program Director, or other offical at the dental school/residency program granting permission for the student/resident to participate in the program
  • Must be vaccinated (COVID-19, Influenza, MMR) and must sign the attestation form. Be prepared to provide proof if requested
  • The College of Dental Medicine does not provide liability/malpractice insurance or health insurance for visiting students/residents. It is the responsibility of the applicant to provide the liability/malpractice coverage from their dental school stating the student/resident will be covered for their activities while at Columbia University Irving Medical center, as well has health coverage must be active. If the student/resident's school or program does not provide liability/malpractice insurance, it may be purchased independently.

If visit is approved and accepted, visiting externs may atend classes, observe in the clinic, and participate in supervised chairside assisting.

Visiting Externship Application

Applicants must submit an Externship Application to be considered. Email the completed application along with supporting documentation to cdm-pgadmissions@cumc.columbia.edu.

*PLEASE NOTE - interested candidates that do not meet the requirements above for an externship opportnity are only eligible for an observational visit.

 

Observational Visit Eligibility

  • Early-career dentists in private practice
  • Internationally-trained dentists
  • U.S. or Canadian dental students (D3, D4) or AEGD/GPR residents who do not have liability insurance

Observational Visit Request Form

To apply for an observational visit, early career dentists, internationally trained dentists, or requests from dentists who are unable to provide liability insurance can submit the Observational Request Form to apply. Email the completed request form to cdm-pgadmissions@cumc.columbia.edu.

Due to hospital insurance liability requirements, if you do not meet the requirements above for an externship experience you are not eligible for the externship program, however, requests may be submitted for an observational visit only.

If observational visit is approved and accepted, visitors may atend classes and observe in the clinic. You are restricted from praticipating in chairside assisting.

 

Additional Information

There is no tuition charge for this program, but participants must find their own housing and pay for their transportation and living expenses. In the event of an emergency, Student Health Services and/or transport to the emergency room would be available to the visiting student/resident and the student/resident will be appropriately billed.
