  • Project title: Implementation of Dental Coverage in Affordable Care Act State-Facilitated Marketplaces
  • Research question: What decisions were made by each of the 17 state-facilitated marketplaces and the federal exchange regarding each of 8 critical determinations that impact dental care and how do these decisions reflect state characteristics?
  • Project goal: Analysis of marketplace decisions will provide a number of "lessons learned" for policymakers as they seek to refine and improve dental coverage under the ACA.

  • Project goal: To determine the effect of tumor microenvironment stiffness on osteosarcoma growth, invasion, lung metastasis, and survival in vivo and in vitro.

  • Research question: What are dentists' attitudes towards the internet-informed patient and are dentists willing to implement online resources into their practices in order to better educate their patients?
  • Project goal: To understand how dentists feel about educating their patients and if this can lead to a better patient-provider relationship.

  • Project goals: To gain insight into the extent, potential sources, and implications of dental anxiety of dental patients at HU; collect quantitative data on dental anxiety and oral health literacy; and provide information for possible interventions for patients and practitioners.

  • Research question: Does NGAL have a protective role in oral epithelium against periodontal pathogens?
  • Project goal: To determine if NGAL has a bacteriostatic effect in a cell culture model of P. gingivalis infection.

  • Project title: The Effect of Estrogen Receptor-Beta on Mandibular Condylar Growth
  • Research question: Does knocking out estrogen receptor-beta allow for better adaptation of the cartilage progenitor cells in response to forced mouth opening?
  • Project goal: To determine whether selectively blocking estrogen receptor-beta can reduce TMJ problems and function as a form of TMJ disorder treatment.

  • Research question: How does dental phobia impact the quality of life of sufferers in the Washington Heights and Harlem community?
  • Project goal: To assess how dental phobia detracts from quality of life psychologically, socially, physically, occupationally, and financially. To use this information to better inform dentists and dental students about this public health issue and equip them to care for such patients.

  • Project goal: To determine the effects of angiogenesis on the osteogenic potential of TMJ-PC's.

  • Project title: Dental Pain and Sensitivity Experience Among Users of a Consumer Oral Health Educational Website and Subscribers to an Insurance Company Health Newsletter
  • Research question: What is the relationship between dental pain and productivity?
  • Project goal: The aim of this project is to 1) analyze previously captured data concerning incidence and prevalence of dental pain and sensitivity; 2) assess the effectiveness of the pain and sensitivity information presented to consumers and determine whether the website can effectively educate consumers; 3) develop updated content for the website in response to the results; 4) explore how pain and sensitivity impacts work absenteeism and productivity, and 5) author a paper on this topic.

  • Project title: Analysis of ACL Fibrocartilage in Estrogen Receptor (ER) Beta Deficient Mice
  • Research question: Does estrogen deficiency cause a delay in maturation that will be reversed by estradiol replacement therapy in female WT, but not in ER beta knock out mice?
  • Project goal: Histologically asses the fibrocartilage interface attachment in female wild type and ER beta deficient mice exposed to altered estrogen levels.

  • Research question: In efforts to regenerate periodontal ligament, how does CTGF affect CD146+ stem cells?
  • Project goal: Measure proliferation and differentiation of CD146+ cells after applying CTGF; isolate cells from rat PDL; characterize cells (CFU-F assay, immunostaining); cell culture.

  • Research question: Can Google Translate accurately translate dental health information into Spanish and Swahili?
  • Project goal: The ultimate goal of this project is to find an accurate and reliable means for a dentist to communicate brief health messages to patients in Spanish and Swahili.

  • Project title: Role of lncRNA HOTAIR in the Specification of Odontoblasts
  • Research question: How is the lncRNA "HOTAIR" involved in odonotoblast differentiation, and can it's downstream effects be altered through the use of RNAi?
  • Project goal: Identify the gene expression profile, role in odontoblast differentiation, and downstream targets of HOTAIR alongside the effects of targeted RNAi.
