Birnberg Research Symposium
The College of Dental Medicine's annual Birnberg Research Program is a 2-day event open to the entire school community, featuring the Birnberg Lecture, student scientific poster presentations, and the presentation of the Birnberg Research Medal Award of the Dental Alumni of Columbia University for Excellence in Dental Research. A guest speaker selected by the Research Committee in consultation with the Dean delivers the Birnberg lecture and is presented with the award.
The Birnberg Research Medal Award of the Dental Alumni of Columbia University for Excellence in Dental Research
The Birnberg Research Medal Award of the Dental Alumni was established by the Alumni Association of the Columbia University School of Dental & Oral Surgery (currently known as the College of Dental Medicine) in the early 1950's to encourage dental research of excellence and help stimulate public interest in support of dental research. The award is named in honor of Dr. Frederick Birnberg (1893-1968), class of 1915, who helped establish a research fund.
The College of Dental Medicine's Research Committee considers individuals who have made significant contributions to dentistry through both research and mentoring for selection as lecturer and recipient of the Birnberg Research Medal Award of the Dental Alumni. Fifty-nine outstanding scientists and teachers have been honored since the first award was presented in 1954.
The Birnberg Student Research Poster Session
The poster session is the highlight of the annual cycle of research and presentation for College of Dental Medicine students. Predoctoral and postdoctoral students who have conducted significant research present their work in an afternoon poster-session/table clinic that is open to the university. Research Committee members along with judges from the faculty review the presentations and select students to receive recognition for their research poster presentations.
