Karim El Kholy, DDS , MSC

Dr. El Kholy is a Professor of Dental Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and a board-certified periodontist. His clinical expertise includes periodontal plastic and reconstructive surgery, implant dentistry, hard- and soft-tissue regeneration, and the management of complex periodontal and implant-related conditions.

Dr. El Kholy is Chair of the International Team for Implantology Scholarship Center at Columbia University and serves as a faculty representative on the CUIMC Institutional Review Board. He plays an active role in predoctoral, postgraduate, and research education.

His scholarly work focuses on periodontal and peri-implant therapy, oral-systemic health, digital implant dentistry, and clinical outcomes research. He has contributed to international consensus initiatives in implant dentistry and is the first author of the chapter on esthetic and periodontal plastic surgery in Carranza’s Clinical Periodontology. His research has been recognized through awards and support from the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation and other professional and industry organizations.

Dr. El Kholy earned a Dr. med. dent. degree from the University of Bern and a Doctor of Medical Sciences degree from Harvard University. He completed his specialty training in periodontics and earned a Master of Science degree at Indiana University. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.
