CDM Welcomes the Inaugural Master of Science in Oral Sciences Cohort
On August 10, 2026, Columbia University College of Dental Medicine welcomed 12 students in the inaugural cohort of its new Master of Science in Oral Sciences program. The one-year graduate degree is designed to provide students with a rigorous foundation in oral and craniofacial sciences while developing the research skills needed to investigate important questions in oral health.
Students began the program with orientation activities introducing them to the Columbia University Irving Medical Center community. Faculty presentations, laboratory and campus tours, academic workshops, and sessions focused on university resources will help students become familiar with the program and begin building relationships with faculty and classmates before formal coursework begins.
The Master of Science in Oral Sciences was developed in response to the need for a structured, research-oriented graduate pathway focused specifically on oral and craniofacial sciences. The program approaches the oral cavity not as an isolated anatomical region, but as a biologically complex system connected to broader questions in human biology, medicine, and public health.
“The relationship between oral and systemic health is increasingly important because many oral diseases share mechanisms with systemic conditions,” said Dr. Silvana Barros, professor of dental medicine at CUIMC, senior associate dean for faculty affairs, and director of the program. “Inflammation, microbial dysbiosis, immune responses, tissue breakdown, wound healing, and behavioral risk factors are relevant to both oral and systemic disease. For researchers, these connections create opportunities to identify biomarkers, improve prevention, and deepen our understanding of disease mechanisms.”
The program brings together students with varied educational and professional backgrounds, including recent college graduates, dental graduates, and internationally trained dentists seeking advanced preparation in oral sciences and research. Their different experiences and career interests will contribute to a learning environment in which scientific inquiry, biomedical knowledge, and diverse perspectives inform one another.
Graduates will be prepared to pursue a range of next steps, including further professional or doctoral education and careers in research, academia, industry, and public health.
The curriculum provides formal training in oral histology, oral biology, cariology, and oral pathology, giving students a foundation in the biological processes that influence oral and craniofacial health and disease. Coursework in research methods, scientific writing, statistics, and data science will help students evaluate scientific evidence, formulate research questions, select appropriate methodologies, and communicate scientific findings clearly.
A structured laboratory immersion will complement the classroom curriculum. Through engagement with research laboratories and faculty investigators, students will be introduced to different scientific environments, areas of expertise, and research approaches across Columbia Dental Medicine and the broader academic medical center.
This combination of coursework and laboratory exposure is intended to help students understand not only how research is conducted, but also how meaningful scientific questions emerge from biological mechanisms, observed patterns of disease, and gaps in existing knowledge.
A central component of the program is the Research Proposal Development in Oral Sciences sequence. Rather than completing a traditional master’s thesis, students will develop a research proposal modeled on the structure and scientific principles of an application to the National Institutes of Health.
Over the course of the year, students will identify an important research question, evaluate the relevant literature, develop a scientific rationale, formulate specific aims, design appropriate methods, and incorporate statistical and feasibility considerations. They will ultimately present their proposals and respond to questions and feedback from faculty.
The experience is designed to integrate the different elements of the curriculum into a single scholarly project while introducing students to the disciplined thinking required to develop a compelling and methodologically rigorous research plan.
Faculty members who participated in interviewing and selecting the inaugural cohort will also contribute to the program’s research curriculum and mentoring environment.
Dr. Karim El Kholy, professor of dental medicine at CUIMC and a faculty member in the program’s research curriculum, emphasized the importance of aligning the scientific question, rationale, and proposed methods.
“It makes you think carefully about what you’re asking, whether the methods match the research question, and whether you’ve built a scientific case that can withstand rigorous review,” El Kholy said.
The program also encourages students to recognize research as a creative process. Developing a new question, selecting an approach, interpreting results, and considering their broader significance require scientific imagination as well as technical knowledge.
“There are two moments that I really like in research,” said Dr. Luiz Pimenta, professor of dental medicine at CUIMC and director of the Division of Prosthodontics. “One is when we are brainstorming and thinking about what can be done, and the other is once we get the results and decide how we’re going to discuss them. For me, those are the creative parts of research.”
The program benefits from its location within an integrated academic medical center. With dental, medical, and biomedical research communities located in close proximity, students will be exposed to scientists, investigators, and interdisciplinary collaborations spanning multiple areas of biomedical research.
That environment will allow students to view oral health within a broader biological context and explore how oral diseases intersect with inflammation, immunity, microbial communities, tissue repair, nutrition, chronic disease, and population health.
Faculty members hope that the diversity of the inaugural cohort will further strengthen the educational experience. Students will enter the program with different areas of knowledge, professional experiences, and long-term goals, creating opportunities to learn from one another while developing a shared foundation in oral sciences and research.
“Our goal is for students to leave the program with a strong foundation in oral sciences, a clear understanding of research methodology, and the ability to connect oral health with broader biomedical and public health questions,” Barros said.
By combining foundational oral science, methodological training, laboratory exposure, and research proposal development, the Master of Science in Oral Sciences aims to prepare students not simply to understand existing knowledge, but to ask the questions that will advance the field.
