Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology

The Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology is an integral part of both the College of Dental Medicine and the Department of Pathology & Cell Biology at Columbia University Medical Center. Our division provides high-quality patient care, pre and postdoctoral curricula and training, and invests in cutting-edge research focusing primarily on oral cancer and precancerous lesions. We are dedicated to providing an environment of scholarly inquiry, teaching, and patient care.

Education

The Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology (OMFP) is responsible for the pre- and postdoctoral didactic curricula involving the diagnosis and management of pathologic diseases of the maxillofacial region. Oral mucosal diseases are diagnosed and treated in our OMP Teaching Clinic. Faculty are also actively engaged in continuing education.

Our Residency Program in Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology, in collaboration with the Department of Pathology & Cell Biology at Columbia University Medical Center, is a three-year hospital-based residency program devoted to training residents to become the leading pathologists in the nation.

Patient Care

The division contributes significant clinical expertise to the dental school and the Medical Center. The Division’s Oral Diagnostic Biopsy Service is a diagnostic resource for both intra and extramural dentists and physicians in the tri-state area and beyond. Both of the oral pathologists are Diplomates of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and hold interdisciplinary appointments in the Department of Pathology & Cell Biology at Columbia University Medical Center.

Our faculty provide oral medicine consultation services to patients with ColumbiaDoctors Dentistry, the faculty practice of the College of Dental Medicine. Services are also provided through the Teaching Clinics and to patients referred from private practices for diagnosis of clinically challenging oral mucosal and jawbone conditions, disease management and long-term follow up.

Research

Division faculty work collaboratively, both intra and extramurally, in translational research efforts focused on discovering diagnostic and prognostic molecular biomarkers for oral cancer and precancerous lesions. The Division’s faculty collaborate intimately with faculty in the Department of Pathology & Cell Biology Mailman School of Public Health and College of Physician & Surgeons at Columbia and are members of the University’s Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center.
