Division of Prosthodontics
Welcome to the Division of Prosthodontics. We provide preclinical and clinical instruction to predoctoral and postdoctoral students in the discipline of contemporary prosthodontic therapy. Our faculty also provide comprehensive and compassionate dental care to the members of our surrounding community and conduct cutting-edge research to advance our discipline’s professional knowledge base.
Prosthodontics is the branch of dentistry responsible for the restoration and replacement of missing teeth. Prosthodontics is that part of restorative dentistry that offers care to patients who have significant damage to existing teeth, missing teeth, congenital defects and problems arising from trauma, neglect, or pathology, restoring the dentition to form, function, and aesthetics.
Education
Prosthodontics is part of the restorative curriculum that, along with the other clinical disciplines and the basic sciences, combine to produce a competent general dentist at the conclusion of the four-year curriculum at the College of Dental Medicine.
The Division of Prosthodontics is responsible for several courses in the predoctoral curriculum: Occlusion, Preclinical Prosthodontics (Year 2), Fixed Prosthodontics, Removable Prosthodontics, Complete Dentures, Implant Retained Restorations, Clinical Prosthodontics (Years 3 & 4), and NERB Preparation.
The postdoctoral Prosthodontics Program prepares residents for specialized clinical practice, board certification and an academic career. Extensive clinical and laboratory phases of prosthodontics training are offered in diagnosis and treatment planning, fixed and removable partial dentures, complete dentures, implant prosthodontics, and maxillofacial prosthodontics.
The Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) Program provides residents with the training and experience in comprehensive multidisciplinary oral health care at a level of skill and complexity beyond that accomplished in predoctoral training.
The Certificate of Professional Achievement in Implantology Program trains practitioners to a level of clinical proficiency in Implant Dentistry.
The Division also offers a Postdoctoral Externship for Foreign Trained Dentists.
Patient Care
Many of our faculty are practicing dentists with ColumbiaDoctors Dentistry, the faculty practice of the College of Dental Medicine.
The Division of Prosthodontics also provides treatment at the College of Dental Medicine's Teaching Clinics. Graduate dentists in specialty training provide care with the assistance and supervision of faculty specialists.
Research
Faculty in the division are engaged in research which involves biomechanics of both restorative materials associated with implantology and restorative dentistry.
